Wishnefsky - Idiot Proof

Lyrics

This instrumental is in 7/4. I always intended for it to open the album. I never entertained the thought of trying to sing on this song. In an early mix, the difference between the quiet intro and louder following part was so extreme that it literally knocked Michael off his mixing chair. We adjusted levels accordingly, and no animals or mixing engineers were injured or killed during the making of this CD.

This is an old song that we demoed in Jabberwock. It never fit on any of that band's records, so it established residence near the bottom of my ever-growing musical trash heap and patiently waited for its time. For reasons that only a psychotherapist could understand, I tend write about the empty half of the half-full glass. This song is an exception.

I originally intended this album to be a collection of quiet, acoustic guitar based songs. That plan changed significantly after I wrote this particular song, which was loosely inspired by my brother, who, at one time in his life, lived like a movie star between movies. I wrote this song at 4 a.m. while under the influence of Prednisone (a synthetic corticosteroid drug), which my physician (and cousin) Matt prescribed for me to counteract the effects of a wicked bee sting.

This song was born at around 2 a.m. on the same Prednisone enhanced evening that I wrote Proof. At the time I wrote All Alone, I was, well, all alone, which was really no surprise at all considering everyone else in the house was fast asleep, including the little devil-dog, Ash-Butt. This song takes a peek at the dark place where we succumb to the temptation to throw everything away and start over.

I meant to write a song about my daughter's evil drama teacher. Instead I wrote a song about the evil ex-wife of someone close to me. I'll have to catch up with the evil drama teacher in a future song. Believe me, she more than deserves to be the target of a Wishnefsky song.

I wrote this song around the same time that my old band Jabberwock recorded the Southland album. We recorded a quick demo. Unfortunately, we never bothered to mix the demo onto a DAT tape, as we did most of our other work at the time. Instead, we dumped a rough mix on a cassette tape that has long been lost. You youngish types may have zero idea about the recording mediums to which I am referring. Anyway, I always liked this song, which, through no fault of its own, never found a place on any of my records until now.

As the U.S. elections approached last year, I wrote a blog attacking the lunacy of a proposition on the California ballot to ban gay marriages. My diatribe included the phrase "the Bible and the Bigot." In the midst of the email hurricane that ensued, my friend Alan had the good sense to point out that "the Bible and the Bigot" would make an excellent song title. He was right and I hope this song does his good sense justice. There is alternative version of this song that features Michael playing a melodic guitar line in the section immediately preceding the guitar solo proper. I replayed Michael's guitar line with a synthesizer and thereupon followed a clash of egos as we each preferred our own version. As proof of Michael's good character, he deferred to my wishes as the artist whose name appears on the CD cover (though he won't hesitate to point out that his version is much better).

I wrote the music for this song so long ago, I can't recall when it was. It was one of those melodies and chord progressions that didn't possess the requisite gravity to attract lyrics until last September when the country was abuzz over the upcoming election and how one of the major candidates seemed better suited for a whore house than the White House.

Lyrics

My wife once read somewhere that more women are beaten on the day of the Super Bowl than any other day of the year. That remark inspired this song, which, thankfully, has nothing to do with the barbaric sport of American football. Rather, this song concerns the barbaric sport of a young lady exacting fatal revenge on her abusive husband. Michael played the guitar solo, which his wife Irina described as "caterwauling." Since I love his solo, I assume Irina meant that as a compliment.

This song is a fictional account of a business deal gone sour as negotiated by the devil disguised as my contracts professor from the first year of law school. He is actually a very nice person (my professor that is – as far as I know, I've never actually met the devil, at least, not yet.)

They lyrics to In Closing describe what would have happened had the evil husband from Don’t Open The Curtains gotten his way. Essentially, it’s nothing but a tender, sentimental, murder ballad. It was the last song written for this album. I wrote the quieter end section first. It was based on a little chord sequence I wrote on the guitar that blossomed once I knew the context of the song. I next wrote the instrumental section and originally intended that it follow the quieter section. Michael sagely suggested that the instrumental come first and be faded in slowly. So that’s what we did.
