Story

I recorded the Use Your Words album in my home studio on a Mac G5 using Logic Pro and Reason software. I played or programmed every instrument you hear. If you want more technical information on the equipment and instruments I use, email me and I'll be happy to answer your questions if I can. I used a ton of samples and loops obtained (legally, I hope) from all over the place. On certain songs, I used samples of a Romanian woman singing. The opening sound on Body is the Romanian chanteuse played back at a lower pitch and with a lot of different effects. This was one of the first songs I wrote for Use Your Words and it felt like an opening track from day one. The basic structure of the song never changed. I've remixed the song what seems like a million times as newer, more powerful versions of Logic and Reason have come out, and as my skills have improved. It is possible to over-mix a song, but I hope I have avoided that dangerous path here. Each successive mix has sounded much better than its predecessors. Lyrically, Body plunges headlong in the depths of my inner psyche. Without being too specific, the song describes the feeling of looking at oneself from the outside and seeing oneself as a rudderless organism behaving in accordance with the laws of nature. At one point in my life, I considered myself a radical behaviorist and greatly admired the work of B.F. Skinner and cohorts. I now believe the Freudian constructs of the un-conscious and sub-conscious do, in fact, exist. However, I see no reason why those parts of the brain would be immune from the laws of behaviorism. Unfortunately, we're generally not aware of what's happening in those unlit places of the brain until it's too late – potent conditioning has already taken place. I think that's why it's so damn hard to change, even if you really want to and recognize that you are doing things that destroy yourself and others.

USE YOUR WORDS c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS My generation loves to tell our kids to "use your words." We say things like, "talk, express your feelings, communicate, there's no need to beat the living tar out of your little sister, etc." The conversation usually goes something like this: Parent: "Don't hit your sibling. Instead, use your words." Child: "Okay, I'll use my words. F*&% you." Parent: "Hmm. The article I read didn't say what to do now." Child: ''Shut up. Sponge Bob is on." In a moment of prolific stupidity, I inadvertently deleted the Logic files of this song. Hence, the original vocal and half of the synth parts are forever lost. The Reason files still exist. Fortunately, I did a really good 16 bit mix before the Logic files vaporized. The voices are samples of someone using their Hungarian words over a loudspeaker in a Budapest train station. The faint chanting you hear during the transition to and from the middle instrumental is me. No samples there. I did my best imitation of Prince Lolli Golli from Rinky Dinky from my youngest daughter's favorite movie, Master of Disguise. I can't remember now what I said. But, I used my words. Wishnefsky

COME TO ME c2002 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS This is from the first batch of songs that I recorded for this album. Like Body Without a Soul, this song has been through a fair amount of changes to the mix, but not the structure. Musically, this is a very simple song – literally two chords. This song derives its strength and power from dynamics and arrangement. In the section between the first chorus and second verse, I wanted something that sounded something like bagpipes. Some of the pad and texture sounds are samples of the Romanian lady singer, even the low notes. There's something a bit eerie about a female voice played back several tones lower than the original pitch. For one, the sample plays back slower. Variations in the pitch seem to stand out more, thereby giving the sound a sense of life and nature. Alien, but still human. Real, but as if in a dream. At a deeper level, a female voice played at a low pitch unifies the genders. Feminine, yet strong. Rumbling, yet tender. The lyrics describe someone whose feet are firmly planted in the concrete that he poured. Guess he should have used his words. Wishnefsky

YOU'LL FIND OUT c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS Ever get in touch with your inner child? Ever need to remind him to use his words? In psychotherapy, my inner child used his words a few times and then ran back to the metaphysical playground. This song features the sampled Romanian diva in a more prominent role. No, that is not guitar in the intro and outro grooves. It is, rather, a sample of a guitar played through various effects that distorted the sound. I created the rhythm tracks by layering together different loops (REX files in Reason). I experimented with unlikely combinations – loops from different styles – to concoct unusual sounds and atmospheres. Some of these experiments rightly landed in the digital trash bin, but many combinations survived. I used this technique throughout these songs and it proved to be a compelling creative stimulant. I ended up with a large collection of unique grooves, some of which may be found on Use Your Words. Wishnefsky

YOUR HUSBAND THE FOOL c2002 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS To set the record straight, I am not the particular foolish husband in this song. On the other hand, to be clear in a double negative sort of way, I deny that I am not a foolish husband. A quick conversation with my wife would set you straight on that issue in no time at all. The fools (notice how I used plural and not singular) in this song are two real people who are now happily divorced. Imagine that. Of all the songs on this album, Husband/Fool employs the least amount of digital trickery. Though the song works quite well as a guitar driven number, I originally wrote it using an organ patch. This is my mom's favorite song on the album. She is happily divorced – and happily remarried. So, no, she is not one of the fools described in the lyric. I would never do that to her. Wishnefsky

GOING INSIDE c2004 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS The inner child in You'll Find Out, the one who ran back to the metaphysical playground, later went home and wrote this song. I am well aware that the rhythm track and acoustic guitars are not always perfectly in time with each other. It was quite intentional. You may think of it as "Humanity on Parade." I probably shouldn't tell you this, but there is a buzz on the acoustic guitar tracks that resulted from my ignorance of proper engineering methodology. I decided against replaying the guitar parts, because I like them. I have managed to remove most of the buzz through clever use of an EQ plug-in. Some carefully placed synth parts also disguise it. However, the buzz is still there and if you listen carefully, you may be able to hear it. Do your best to ignore it. This is far too good of a song to let a minor imperfection disturb your enjoyment. BLINDNESS c2004 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS Some people are so bent on being rescued that they don't care what happens to the rescuers in the process I went after an 80s type of sound here. Not that there is anything particularly redeeming about the music produced in that decade, but Blindness wanted to go in that direction and was willing to turn a deaf ear, as it were, to the shortcomings of the age of New Wave, MTV, cocaine, spandex, and Ronald Reagan. DECEIVER c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS Deceiver had been rotting away in the waste bin of obscurity when my lovely daughter Sophie resurrected it with her wonderfully performed vocals. Her part inspired me to surgically remove all that bugged me about the former version and replace it with new elements that elevated the song to new heights. Deceiver previously featured long samples of a Budapest metro station. The samples provided an exotic aural underpinning, but, unfortunately, the song didn't leave the station with the trains and it wasn't all that interesting to listen to. After Sophie breathed life back into the song, I took out most of the train station samples and only one remains – barely perceptible - in the section between the first chorus and second verse. I added the ethereal synth pad and distorted sequenced synth patch. I changed the sound of literally everything else – drums, bass, synths, guitars, and vocals. The lyric asks not who is the one doing the deceiving, but, rather, who is the one being deceived. The answers to both questions are not necessarily different. Wishnefsky

FIRE OF DESIRE c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS If you write enough songs on acoustic guitar, sooner or later you will author a campfire song and that's what happened to me here. This is, by far, my youngest daughter's favorite song on this album. I interpret that fact as one giving great hope for Fire of Desire. Incidentally, when my daughters sing along, they awkwardly skip the line about the pimp in the last verse. I refuse to tell them exactly what I sing there until they're old enough to appreciate their father's unique sense of humor. There is a line in the second verse - "you only want what you can't get" – stolen verbatim from an old lyric penned by my buddy Alan Rosenbach that I set to music a long time ago. The song was entitled "Bagels on the Beach in Bali." It may be the only song in the history of music that addresses Linus Pauling and Jewish delicacies in a pop song format. I generally steal only from myself, but I feel justified in plagiarizing from the lone lyric ever written by Alan because, back in the day, he inadvertently kicked my old Korg analog synthesizer and broke a few keys that were never the same and required copious amount of duct tape to remain in place. That was the same day that Alan stabbed himself in the eyelid with a switchblade while pretending to dual with me. Before you express too much amazement, consider this is the same guy who once laughed so hard at a joke on a Dixie cup that he head-butted the corner of a microwave oven and needed several stitches in his forehead. Alan's parents seriously questioned whether he would survive long enough to be able to vote. As a postscript, I'm happy to report that he did survive and is now a very successful dermatologist and laser surgeon in Century City. If you have an unsightly boil on your buttocks, he's your man. NOVEMBER 7 c2004 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS There is absolutely no special significance whatsoever about the title of this song. It merely reflects the date I started working on it. When I start new ideas, I name them by their birthday. Later, if the idea grows into a legitimate song, I will give it a proper title. Here, no matter how hard I slammed my head into the corner of the microwave, I could not think up a decent title. As for the lyric, it concerns the death of a fictional character who lives his entire life in the foul smoke of the city and dies from the fresh air of the countryside. The rhythm track is a good example of the loop layering technique I frequently employed while devising these songs. This song didn't really come to life until I added electric guitar. Wishnefsky

CHRISTMAS GOOSE c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS Many songwriters, myself included, aspire to compose a timeless Christmas Carole, filled with good spirit, holiday cheer, and chestnuts roasting over an open fire. That is what I set out to do with Christmas Goose. I failed abysmally. Instead of a heart-warming family sing-a-long, I contrived a somewhat sinister electronic excursion into the darkness inside the oven after the door is slammed shut – and you're on the wrong side. My daughter Sophie sang the answering vocal at the end of the song. She was only about seven or so when we recorded the part. She hates it now because her voice has matured and she thinks she sounds like a little girl. She also dislikes the enormous amount of effect. I feel differently. I think it sounds great and her vocals are the highlight of the song to me. The effects put the vocal in the right space in the context of everything else happening in this song. Christmas Goose takes prime advantage of two idiosyncratic techniques I used on this album: creating rhythm tracks by layering loops and devising ethereal textures by manipulating samples of the Romanian female troubadour. WHAT'S BEHIND THIS SMILE c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS To live is to be sad. So, I am naturally suspicious of anyone who smiles more than is appropriate, especially when that person is myself. Don't get me wrong. I am happy and enjoy life. It's just that, as Anakin Skywalker and Severus Snape discovered, the dark side is much more interesting and therefore entices the brave and curious. I promise not to cast any spells or play Jedi mind tricks on you. I stole the bridge from an old song I wrote a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away. I always liked that section and had been waiting for the right opportunity to drop it in a song. The energy and power of the bridge presents a dynamic juxtaposition with the quietness of the remainder of the track. There is a fair amount of acoustic guitar on this song and the rest of the album. My hope is that the intersection of electronica with acoustic instruments gives the music a sense of humanity, bobbing about on the high seas of high technology. Wishnefsky

COME TO ME (REPRISE) c2002 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS This song is part of the original group that blossomed into the foundation for this album. As with other songs, it relies on loop layering and voice sample manipulation to create the basic sound. The guitars came later. While I doubt David Gilmour is breaking a sweat over my guitar solo, I'm quite proud of it. Wishnefsky

GET IT OVER WITH c2003 by Wishnefsky COMMENTS A song with such a title as "Get it Over With" does not belong anywhere the near the beginning of an album for obvious reasons. I wrote this song while we were staying at my parents' house in the Eastern Sierras. It was one of those songs that just flowed out without much effort, confirming the hypothesis that artists are not sources of creativity, but rather conduits. I am not a religious person, but I feel a strong sense of spirituality and connection when I write, and especially when the muses favor me with a moment of artistic excellence. The intimate nature and mood of this song called for a sparse arrangement. I introduced the Philip Glass-like string section with some trepidation, but it worked quite well. So, after all of the odysseys into the world of samples, synths, and loops, the album comes home to a boy and his guitar. Wishnefsky
